ITIL® Product (Version 5)

Course Outline
Managing Digital Products as Integrated Value Streams
A practical course based on the official PeopleCert information for ITIL Product (Version 5).
ITIL Product (Version 5) develops skills for managing digital products as integrated value streams, connecting product capabilities, services, and business outcomes throughout the lifecycle.
The module is suitable for professionals at every stage of their career and focuses on digital product management, the end-to-end lifecycle, cross-functional value alignment, and evidence-based product decision-making.
What Makes ITIL Product (Version 5) Different?
• Focus on digital products and their integration with digital services.
• Managing the product as an integrated system for creating and realizing value.
• Optimizing value streams and flow by reducing waste and improving measurable outcomes.
• Strategic discovery, prioritization, and product direction based on evidence.
• Human-centred design for scalable, sustainable, usable, and resilient digital products.
• AI-enabled ways of working integrated into product development and support.
Key Outcome
By the end of the course, participants will be able to understand and apply the ITIL Product and Service Lifecycle Model to manage a digital product from discovery through support, coordinate work between product and service teams, and use metrics, feedback loops, and lifecycle data to inform product decisions.

Day 1
Digital Product, Service, and Value Creation
Day Objective
Build a holistic understanding of how digital products provide capabilities, how digital services enable value realization, and how both are managed as an integrated system.
Topics
• Digital Product and Service Integration — product capabilities and value realization through services.
• The digital product as an integrated system of capabilities, services, and business outcomes.
• ITIL Product and Service Lifecycle Model — management from discovery through support.
• Value co-creation and cross-functional value alignment.
• The roles of stakeholders and cross-functional product/service teams.
• Lifecycle success — how product success is measured through data and feedback.
• Evidence-based product decision-making — using metrics, feedback loops, and lifecycle performance data.
• The connection between product strategy, delivery, and realized outcomes.
Practical Exercises
• Map a product and service: capabilities → service → outcome.
• Identify key stakeholders and points of cross-functional alignment.
• Define metrics and feedback loops for the lifecycle of a sample digital product.
• Short case study: a product that must balance growth, reliability, and business outcomes.
Expected Outcome
Participants begin to view the product not simply as functionality or technology, but as an integrated system that must deliver measurable value throughout its lifecycle.

Day 2
Strategic Product Direction, Design, and Flow
Day Objective
Develop skills in product discovery, strategic direction, human-centred design, and value stream optimization.
Topics
• Strategic Discovery and Product Direction.
• Aligning product roadmaps with organizational strategy.
• Structured discovery, prioritization, and evidence-based decision-making.
• Value Stream Integration and Flow Optimization — identifying, mapping, and improving product value streams.
• Optimizing flow, reducing waste, and achieving measurable outcomes.
• Human-Centred Product Design.
• Design thinking and human-centred design principles.
• Creating user-centered, scalable, resilient, usable, and sustainable digital products.
• Resource and Supplier Orchestration — decisions for acquiring and combining technology, talent, and suppliers.
• Scalability and long-term resilience.
Practical Exercises
• Workshop on discovery and prioritization of a product initiative.
• Value-stream mapping and identification of bottlenecks/waste.
• Human-centred design scenario: turning a user need into a product solution.
• Evaluate resource and supplier options against scalability and resilience.
Expected Outcome
Participants can connect product strategy, discovery, design, and flow optimization into a unified approach to value creation.

Day 3
Build, Quality, Transition, Operations, and AI-Enabled Ways of Working
Day Objective
Apply ITIL Product guidance across build, deployment, and operational stages, with a focus on quality, risk control, observability, reliability, and AI-enabled ways of working.
Topics
• Build and Quality Engineering Integration.
• Integrating design into build activities.
• Automation, testing, governance, and technical debt management.
• Controlled Transition and Deployment.
• Structured and risk-aware product transition.
• Operational readiness and observability built in from the outset.
• Reliable and Observable Operations.
• Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles.
• Observability, capacity, and continuity planning.
• Monitoring and performance management.
• Automation for reliability, availability, and resilience.
• AI-enabled ways of working in product development and support.
• Connecting product thinking with service management during operations and support.
Practical Exercises
• Plan a controlled transition with operational readiness criteria.
• Define quality gates, automation, and an approach to technical debt.
• Build an observability and monitoring scenario.
• Case study: a product team uses AI in development/support while maintaining quality, reliability, and control.
Final Exam Preparation
• Review key concepts and relationships between lifecycle stages.
• Practice questions and scenarios.
• Practice working with the official open-book format.
• Review common mistakes and time-management strategies.
